Lifting Up – Day 1

The hipped roof style “Yosemunezukuri” may be one of the most attractive ones, as it is also used for temples, but for repair and maintenance it surely is the most affording and labour intensive one.

In some of the pictures you see a complex kind of hip rafter joint “Yosemune no sumi“. Precisely manufactured tenon and mortise “goya hozo sashi” are necessary to make this joint. In the last pictures the temporary construction is removed as by now the old rotten post and rafter are mended and connected with new joints to stabilise the building.
