Performance costume from antique Kabuki writings I found in South Korea.
Pansori is a Korean genre of musical storytelling performed in a hoarse voice which does not distinguish between male and female. Pansori singers belonged to the lowest class of society, along with shamanesses (whose spouses they were), butchers, as well as itinerant artists. In the early 20th century, pansori was more frequently performed indoors and staged similarly to Western operas. Due to the influence of the Japanese occupation at this time it was often censored when referring to the monarchy or to Korean nationalism.
