Villa Karbach | Salzkammergut AT

18.5-29.9.24 Austria | The exhibition “Villa Karbach – Wie der Skurrealismus zur Welt kommt” is part of the European Capital of Culture in Salzkammergut, Austria. Together with works of the artist Walter Pilar (†2018), the part 2 of the Glöckler project was shown at the Villa Pantschoulidzeff (built by Theophil Hansen 1854). Two caps were produced for the project which is located at the origin place of the 150 years old “Glöckler” tradition. The new interpretation with antique Japanese washi paper was seen very controversial by a certain local community. Accordingly, the interest in Anita Gratzer’s work was exceptionally high, as documentary photographs of earlier works were also shown.

Clothing made of paper, generally not very well known in this region, was noticed with interest. In addition to the festive processions, the home region in Austria also shares the tradition of paper production with Anita’s second home in Japan, Gunma.
